Why Texas A&M's Marcel Reed is the X-factor vs. LSU?

Texas A&M is about to enter the toughest stretch of its schedule, though last week’s loss to Kentucky suggests it may have already begun.

If the Aggies are going to bounce back, much will depend on Marcel Reed. He struggled against Kentucky, throwing two costly interceptions and missing a wide-open running back on fourth down. Pressure contributed to the rough outing, but several of Reed’s decisions and throws made a bad day worse.

Tiger Stadium gives him a chance to respond in a place where he has already won. Reed accounted for four touchdowns in Texas A&M’s 49-25 victory at LSU last season.

LSU will likely pressure Reed and try to force quick decisions. A&M cannot afford turnovers or stalled drives against a team capable of pulling away. Reed’s mobility can help when protection breaks down, but he has to avoid forcing a throw every time a play goes off schedule.

To be fair, the offensive line was not the main problem against Kentucky. Reed missed throws, stared down receivers at times and passed up chances to run when the opening was there. Those are things he can control.

Remain composed when the initial read is unavailable

Use his legs selectively rather than abandoning the passing concept too early

Convert manageable third downs and finish scoring opportunities

Get Mario Craver and the other playmakers involved without forcing targets

Reed does not have to be perfect. He does need to look like the experienced quarterback Texas A&M expected him to become. A controlled, efficient game would give the Aggies a chance to leave Baton Rouge with a major road victory. Another turnover-filled performance could put them in a hole they cannot escape.
