Why Mike McCarthy's coaching flexibility is winning over Steelers fans

When the Pittsburgh Steelers hired Mike McCarthy as head coach, skepticism shadowed the announcement. Fans and analysts questioned whether a veteran retread could reignite a historic franchise or if Pittsburgh had missed an opportunity to hire a younger, offensive-minded coordinator.

At the midseason bye week, sitting with a 6-2 record, McCarthy has reshaped that narrative by doing something rare for a Super Bowl-winning veteran coach: checking his ego at the door.

On “The Snap Count” podcast, former Steelers offensive lineman Trai Essex and quarterback Charlie Batch highlighted how McCarthy’s willingness to self-correct early-season missteps transformed the team’s trajectory.

“I was disappointed when we decided on Mike McCarthy, a retread,” Essex admitted. “I wanted the dude, the defensive coordinator from the Rams [or] Kubiak. We made the right choice. Mr. Rooney, Omar Khan, whoever made the final decision, they made the right choice. McCarthy, nobody wanted to be in Pittsburgh more than him.”

McCarthy’s initial slate of decisions, from altering training camp tackling rules to offensive line configurations, didn’t pay immediate dividends. Yet rather than doubling down out of pride, he quickly adjusted course.

“What he did, what a lot of coaches don’t do, CB, is he admitted that a change needed to happen and he did it,” Essex explained. “Coaches don’t do that. Usually don’t do that early in the year, especially on a veteran-led team. They like to stick to their guns. They like to be stubborn. No, he made wholesale changes when he saw problems were happening.”

Batch echoed that praise, giving McCarthy an A-minus grade for establishing a culture of belief.

“He has changed the culture,” agreed Batch. “He has these players believing that they truly have a chance to win a Super Bowl and they’re playing that way.”

By prioritizing accountability over ego, McCarthy has turned initial doubters into believers while putting Pittsburgh firmly in AFC contention.
