Why Joel Klatt thinks Georgia football won't win national championship
College football expert Joel Klatt thinks that the Georgia Bulldogs playmakers surrounding quarterback Gunner Stockton could really limit UGA this season. Klatt thinks Georgia is a team that a lot of experts aren’t talking about heading into the season and views Georgia’s lack of playmakers as a reason why.
“Who is catching the football (for Georgia)?” Klatt asked. “I don’t think you can win a national championship just dominating on defense. There’s going to be a moment when you have to make a play.”
Georgia’s offense struggled to generate explosive plays in 2025, but was still effective. The Bulldogs lost receivers Zachariah Branch, Colbie Young, Noah Thomas and Dillon Bell to the 2026 NFL draft, so receiver is an obvious position of concern entering the 2026 season.
Georgia did add Georgia Tech transfer Isaiah Canion via the transfer portal, but the Bulldogs are primarily relying on returning players and recruits that are fairly unproven at wide receiver. Georgia appears to be set at tight end, so we don’t see that being an issue, but Klatt still thinks Georgia has issues in terms of pass catchers.
Klatt’s “biggest question about Georgia” is the Bulldogs’ lack of playmakers. He has confidence in Stockton and “has zero doubt” that Georgia will be excellent this fall. He views Georgia as a contender to win the SEC, but thinks Georgia may not be able to win a shootout in the College Football Playoff.
“I have a hunch we’re going to get down to it and that’s gonna be the one thing (lack of playmakers) that holds them back from winning a national championship,” Klatt said. “It is not going to be Gunner (Stockton). I think Gunner is fine. It is the lack of threats.”
When we have a guest on the show, we typically ask the questions. @joelklatt had one for us this time:
“What’s the sentiment with Georgia?”
Klatt believes a lack of offensive playmakers will prevent the Dawgs from winning a national championship. Do you agree? pic.twitter.com/rgHClCYlxc
