One of the nation’s top high school football teams opens its season Friday, as St. Frances Academy travels to Florida to face DeLand.

Baltimore-based St. Frances is ranked No. 3 nationally by MaxPreps this week, the only school in the top nine that has yet to play a game. The Panthers’ usual ambitious schedule begins with back-to-back games in the Sunshine State, with DeLand this week and Vero Beach next week. 

Standout defenders lead the way for St. Frances, with a pair of seniors in five-star Texas Tech-bound edge Anthony Sweeney and four-star corner Raylaun Henry, a Texas A&M commit, set to make life difficult for offenses. 

That should make for a fascinating matchup, as the Bulldogs’ offense put up some eye-popping numbers last season. DeLand topped 50 points six times last season, including a pair of 70-point games.
