Where does OU go from here after disappointing loss to Michigan?

The Oklahoma Sooners dropped to 1-1 in the 2026 season after a 17-10 loss on the road against the Michigan Wolverines. OU failed their first test of the season and played poor, sloppy football in a bad loss.

Expectations were sky-high entering the season, but just two games into Year 5 under head coach Brent Venables, the Sooners saw their season crumble in Ann Arbor. All of the offseason talk and hype that surrounded Oklahoma fell flat in the Big House.

Firstly, though the defense was much better in the second half, the Sooners did not look like a Venables-led defense in the first half. After riding the defense to 10 wins and a spot in the College Football Playoff last season, this year’s defense isn’t nearly as good, at least not yet. In addition to a loss on their record, the OU defense will also be without their heart and soul for a large chunk of time, as linebacker Kip Lewis was injured in the loss.

Despite only giving up 17 total points, Oklahoma’s defense tackled poorly, didn’t force any turnovers, and was outflanked often in the first half. The second half was far better on that side of the ball, but the Sooners still lost because of their anemic offense.

All offseason, the Sooners talked about being better at running the ball and more committed to it. That lasted one game, as Oklahoma actually looked worse on offense on Saturday than they did last year. They abandoned the running backs in the running game, and the multiple-look structure-wise largely went out the window.

All offseason long, the Sooners lauded their offensive line, which was experienced coming into the year. Against Michigan, they were dominated up front and couldn’t protect the passer or open running lanes. Even though Michael Fasusi was out, OU had still expected to play a lot better than that in the trenches.

All offseason long, the Sooners talked up their new weapons in the passing game. Aside from tight end Rocky Beers, just about everyone struggled to get open against the Wolverine secondary.

All offseason long, the Sooners praised the growth of offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and his ability to adapt and keep defenses guessing. On Saturday, Sooner Nation saw very little of that, as the offense Arbuckle was hired to fix still isn’t close to good enough.

All offseason long, the Sooners glowed about how much better quarterback John Mateer was going to be. His hand was healthy, he watched film with Venables, he trained with Sam Bradford, he talked with Terry Bradshaw, and he got even more ripped. His improvement was a foregone conclusion, and Oklahoma bet big on him. Two games in, Mateer looks like the same player he was for the last two months of last season. He’s a great athlete, but his pocket presence, accuracy, footwork, and decision-making were all well below what they needed to be to get the win on Saturday. With multiple chances to lead OU to a game-tying drive, he was not good.

All offseason long, the Sooners assured that Mateer could take them where they needed to go. Oklahoma did their best this offseason to take the pressure off of him and surround him with good weapons and a better rushing attack. However, in just the second game, OU was right back where they were last year, relying on Mateer to do everything.

Of course, it’s still very early in the season, and the Sooners will have multiple opportunities to get back on playoff track with the difficult schedule they face. However, the flip side is that Oklahoma’s season could go off the rails quickly if they don’t improve soon, given the difficult schedule they face. Both Georgia and Texas are on the horizon, along with a gauntlet of an SEC schedule after that.

Venables signed a contract extension right before the season, and some will once again begin to question his capability to take the Sooners to the promised land, and rightfully so. Saturday’s performance was not good enough. Michigan was the better, hungrier, and more desperate team, and considering the expectations OU had coming into the season, this loss dampens a lot of the excitement surrounding the 2026 Sooners. The one advantage Venables, Arbuckle, Mateer, and the rest of the team have is time to fix it this season. However, that time is running out, and Oklahoma has now played themselves into a perilous situation just two games into what was once a very promising season.
