What Scottie Scheffler shot around Bellerive in practice ahead of the BMW Championship this week
Scottie Scheffler looks to be ready to pick up where he left off at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, with the world number one playing the front nine at Bellerive in four under par during a practice round on Wednesday.
It is extremely tempting to back Scheffler to win all three playoff events this year due to the manner of his victory in Memphis.
The 30-year-old finished eight shots clear of anyone else in a tournament that involved almost all of the top 70 players on the PGA Tour this year.
It was certainly a statement of intent.
Scottie Scheffler sends an ominous warning with his practice round ahead of the BMW Championship
Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion this week at the BMW Championship. However, his victory 12 months ago does not count for a great deal, with that event held at Caves Valley.
Bellerive previously hosted the event in 2008, when Scheffler was 12 years old. Thankfully, it does appear that the American is not struggling to get to grips with the course.
According to Grant Salsman, Scheffler shot a 31 on the front nine in Missouri during a practice round on Wednesday. And it seems that his approach play was particularly lethal.
He posted: ‘Scottie played the front nine today and shot a 31 with two lip outs. Put every approach besides one within 15 feet‘.
Scottie Scheffler’s assessment of Bellerive ahead of the BMW Championship
Scheffler has essentially proved in the early years of his professional career that he can win on any type of golf course. He has stood up to all sorts of tests and looked extremely comfortable.
So it should come as little surprise that he has found his feet at Bellerive.
And speaking to the media on Wednesday, he explained what he thought of the golf course.
“It’s a big golf course. I think this one has a lot more length than last week’s course did,” he said.
“Fairways are a bit wider. The greens are really big, but I think some of the areas you play into are going to play pretty small. They have a ton of pitch to them. You get into the wrong section of these greens you’re going to have a lot of up-and-over-type challenging putts.
“I think fairways are going to be important as well, just because there’s certain holes with the length that you have, if I’m not in the fairway, I’m going to have a hard time reaching the green. There’s also some holes where there’s no real area to run the ball up to. So looking at a little bit of a different style test than we saw last week.”
Scheffler has been so close to having everything click throughout the season. Last week seemed to be the turning point, and he took the opportunity with both hands.
If he is anywhere near as good this week, he is going to be incredibly difficult to stop.
The signs in practice suggest that he is ready to steal the show again.
