Fox Sports are said to be frustrated by what they see as ESPN’s limited coverage of the FIFA World Cup, even after one of Team USA’s most significant results in tournament history.

The 2026 World Cup kicked off with the USMNT’s 4-1 win over Paraguay, drawing a massive television audience across the country.

But according to a report from Front Office Sports, some Fox executives felt ESPN didn’t give the moment enough attention, despite the network’s reputation as the “Worldwide Leader in Sports.”

The frustration came from what Fox saw as a lack of recognition for a milestone moment in American football.

The win over Paraguay wasn’t just an impressive start, it was the first time the USMNT had won a World Cup match by three goals since the 1930 tournament.

With viewership across Fox, Telemundo, and Peacock reportedly nearing 25 million, some inside Fox felt the coverage should have reflected the scale of the event.

Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy reported that one source questioned ESPN’s response, saying:

“We’re talking about a historic performance by Team USA. Where in the hell was ESPN?”

That frustration comes in the context of Fox having held World Cup broadcast rights in the US since taking over from ESPN before the 2018 tournament.

ESPN’s position may not be as straightforward as it appears

While Fox’s concerns are clear, the situation is complicated by broadcast restrictions tied to FIFA’s media rights agreements.

As Front Office Sports noted, ESPN isn’t allowed to air highlights of World Cup matches until all of that day’s games have finished and Fox’s coverage window has closed.

These restrictions also limit how highlights are distributed across ESPN’s platforms, making it harder to provide the kind of coverage some viewers expect.

Still, ESPN did respond to the criticism. On Get Up, host Mike Greenberg addressed the issue directly, saying:

“We’ll cover this every day for you here, because obviously this is a major international happening taking place on national soil.”

With the NFL offseason in full swing and other major sports in their offseasons, Fox’s argument is straightforward: if Team USA keeps winning and the audience remains this large, no network can afford to overlook the World Cup.

And as Mauricio Pochettino’s side continues to impress, the scrutiny around ESPN’s coverage decisions is only likely to grow.
