What is the Detroit Lions’ ceiling for the 2026 season?

It’s become the battle cry of Detroit Lions fans annually after the previous season has come to its disappointing conclusion.

There haven’t been many more recent seasons more disappointing for Lions fans than the 2025 campaign. For the prior four seasons, it had been all about growth. 2022 ended with Detroit’s thrilling Week 18 win to kick the Packers out of the playoffs and make a statement that the Lions are coming. 2023 was the closest this team has ever come to making a Super Bowl, with an unbelievably run deep into the playoffs. In 2024, Detroit posted a franchise high in regular season wins (15), only to see it come crashing down with a second-round exit in the playoffs.

After each of those seasons, it felt like it was inevitable Detroit would eventually break free of the postseason torment and finally reach the elusive Super Bowl. We said, “Next year is our year” with actual confidence, not an ironic twinge.

Then 2025 happened. Detroit took their first clear step back as a franchise under coach Dan Campbell, and it certainly has some wondering if the Lions can right the ship and get back to championship contention. So today’s Question of the Day is:

My answer: Well, if you believe ESPN’s prediction model and their full 2026 NFL season preview, Detroit’s ceiling for wins is a 13-4 record, and they’ve got a 71.4 percent chance of making the playoffs. So, certainly, making the playoffs should be considered the expectation, not the ceiling.

But how far can this team make it? Can they really orchestrate a Super Bowl run? Does their roster compete with the consensus contenders like the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, and Seattle Seahawks—the three teams with the best Super Bowl odds?

I would contend that they do. Their offense is filled with superstardom, from Jared Goff to Jahmyr Gibbs to Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell. And as I pointed out last week, the team’s depth on the offensive and defensive lines are deeper than they’ve been in quite some time.

Sure, there are questions about how quickly the newly formed offensive line can gel together. And there is certainly warranted concern about both the starting-level talent and depth at cornerback. Every team has questions, and every roster has some talent gaps. We here in Detroit tend to obsess over those things, as they are typically the things that sink this franchise.

And they could very well again this year. But at the same time, the Lions’ schedule looks easier to start the season, which should give the offensive line some grace to continue to build chemistry. And while the cornerback room certainly looks like the team’s biggest weakness, Detroit’s investment in pass rush and assignment-sound safeties could be enough to mask that weakness as much as possible.

So do I think the Super Bowl is on the table for the Lions this year? Absolutely. Will it require several things to go Detroit’s way in 2026? Yes, and that is the case with every single Super Bowl winner in NFL history. So pour a little Kool-Aid in your coffee this morning.
