There is only one Shohei Ohtani on earth, so the mentioned matchup is completely hypothetical. But in the age of modern baseball, there are still ways to know what would happen if Ohtani stood in the batter’s box against Ohtani on the mound.

Thanks to advanced metrics, there may actually be a clear answer. At least for the 2026 season, the edge is with Ohtani, the pitcher. While it may feel absurd at first to go against one of baseball’s most fearsome hitters, his 2026 pitching numbers are just too good.

According to Baseball Savant, this year, the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger has an average exit velocity of around 94 mph, a hard-hit rate near 50 percent, and his expected weighted on-base average (xwOBA) is around .400. This is elite stuff. Despite what can be said as an underwhelming start to the season, Ohtani’s barrel has been among the best in the league.

However, Ohtani’s pitching metrics tilt the debate one-sided.

The right-hander has proven to be the best arm in run prevention this season so far. Hitters are struggling to square him up as he has pitched to an ERA of just 0.82. The Japanese ace uses the four-seam fastball most (44%), averaging 97.9 mph, followed by splitter, curveball and sinker against left-handed hitters. Occasionally, he has thrown sinker, slider, and cutter. His breaking ball whiff numbers are at an all-time high.

Shohei Ohtani’s pitching holds the edge

As a hitter, Shohei Ohtani feasts on velocity. The faster it comes to him, the better his swings are statistically. But the 2026 version of the Dodgers pitcher is far more than just a flamethrower.

His devastating sweeper, splitter, cutter and upper-90s fastball can hinder his timing. In 2026, Baseball Savant claims that Ohtani has produced a whiff rate of over 40 percent against offspeed pitches. Meanwhile, against express velocity, his whiff rate drops to the low 20s.

However, one wrong pitch and that hanging splitter, curveball/elevated fastball, slider will be found in the stands. But over one plate appearance, Ohtani the pitcher will probably evade with a strikeout, weak contact, or a chase on the splitter/sweeper below the zone. But let’s also add that the 2025 and 2024 version of Ohtani’s batting would have probably prevailed.
