What happened to Florida football WR Vernell Brown III vs Ole Miss?

Florida football wide receiver Vernell Brown III missed time in the second half of the Gators’ victory over Ole Miss.

Fortunately, Brown wasn’t needed as the Gators defeated the Rebels 52-28 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Brown suffered a knee injury after he ran for a 6-yard gain on a jet sweep with less than six minutes left in the second quarter.

“Nothing’s substantial, nothing’s torn, but he just wasn’t quite confident in cutting it loose there after he tweaked it there late in the second quarter,” Florida coach Jon Sumrall said. “Feel pretty good about him being available, but it’s too early to know moving forward.”

The sophomore, who led UF in receiving last season, had three catches for 25 yards against Ole Miss before he exited. Brown is UF’s leading receiver with 17 catches, 271 yards and two scores.

Brown wasn’t the only receiver to deal with an injury, as Bailey Stockton was sidelined after a vicious targeting hit in the second quarter. He did manage to return, but was limited in the second half.

“He took a pretty significant shot to his back,” Sumrall said. “Doesn’t look like anything that should keep him out long term; he came back in and obviously had the punt return. But he just wasn’t quite himself, and so didn’t play a whole lot there in the second half.”

Notably, Eric Singleton Jr., one of UF’s top transfer portal additions, returned after missing the last two weeks. Singleton caught a 38-yard pass late in the fourth quarter.
