What ex-Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said about fellow Indiana alum Dusty May

Mark Cuban is no longer the majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks but the Indiana University alumnus and minority owner recently spoke out about the franchise’s new head coach: Dusty May.

“He is an Indiana grad. I met him way back when he worked as a student manager and video coach. I’m sure he will do a great job,” Cuban said according to Mavericks beat reporter Mike Curtis.

Cuban, an outspoken supporter of Indiana University athletics praised his fellow alumnus, as the Mavericks make the announcement just one day prior to the 2026 NBA Draft.

Dusty May is a native of Bloomfield, Indiana, located just a few dozen miles from Bloomington. A graduate of IU, May was notably a student-manager of the men’s basketball program under former head coach Bob Knight from 1996-2000.

After spending a decade and a half as an assistant making stops across the country, he got his first head-coaching opportunity in Boca Raton, with the Florida Atlantic Owls. In his time at Florida Atlantic, May set records at the University for career wins, single season wins, and even led the Owls to their first Final Four (2023) in program history.

Following a historic run with the Owls, May started to garner attention from some of the biggest programs across the country. In 2024, he left the palm trees to take a new role as the head of the Michigan program.

In his first season at Michigan, the Wolverines started slow before picking up steam as the season wore on. May’s squad won the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament and made a Sweet 16 appearance in his first year at the helm.

May and the Wolverines entered the 2025-2026 season with what was considered to be one of the strongest rosters in college basketball, and they proved this to be the case. Michigan was strong all year, earning a top seed in the NCAA tournament before eventually topping the UConn Huskies in the national championship two months ago in Indianapolis.

Now, nearly thirty years after he began as a student-manager at Indiana, he gets his first NBA head coaching opportunity with the Dallas Mavericks.
