‘We’ll see’: Ex-Red thinks out-of-form Man Utd star was feigning injury to miss out vs Leeds

· · 2 min read

Ashley Young has bizarrely voiced his doubts over whether Lisandro Martinez was actually injured for the second half of Leeds United vs Manchester United.

The centre-half was withdrawn at the interval and replaced by Noussair Mazraoui after feeling some discomfort in his thigh.

What did Young have to say about Martinez?

However, Young has now questioned whether that was indeed the case.

He said on the latest instalment of The Overlap Daily: “Obviously, all week everything was Lisandro Martinez. Instead of creating more of a hype around it by leaving him out – when it would be the talk before the game and then it would be the talk after the game – play him.

“He came off at half-time with an injury. Is he injured? If he’s injured, it’s understandable if he doesn’t play in the Como game. But I’m not sure.

“Going to Leeds away is a tough place, and after the week that he had, are you able to back that? Are you injured? Yeah, possibly. We’ll see.”

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick has already ruled the Argentine out of tonight’s clash with Como, and added that he remains a doubt for the weekend’s Premier League encounter at home to Bournemouth.

Martinez is currently overseeing the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, after which United have the option of extending his stay by an additional 12 months.

Reports have suggested they will do so, but only so that they can then offload him next summer and recoup a fee for his signature.

His recent outburst in Madrid, as well as his torrid injury record, has seemingly done enough to convince INEOS he’d be best off moving on in 2027.

The 28-year-old was reportedly keen on following in the footsteps of his close friend and compatriot Cristian Romero and completing a switch to Atletico Madrid before 2026/2027 got underway, so they would presumably be his first choice when the window reopens.
