We Will Deliver Over 100,000 Housing Units, Make Them Accessible – Rhodes-Vivour

· · 1 min read

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has promised to deliver more than 100,000 housing units if elected, saying his administration will make them affordable and accessible to ordinary Lagosians.

Rhodes-Vivour made the promise during the 2027 Lagos State governorship debate organised by Channels Television, TVC, Punch Newspapers, Vanguard Newspapers and The Cable on Sunday.

He said the housing programme would prioritise ordinary Lagosians rather than the wealthy, adding that the units would be allocated transparently to prevent individuals from owning multiple properties under the scheme.

“The elites, the rich can do for themselves. The government role is to lift up people that cannot do for themselves, and this comes into housing to ensuring that we deliver 100,000 plus housing units and make it affordable, so that it is transparently allocatable. We are not going to have a situation where one person can own ten units,” Rhodes-Vivour said.

He described the proposal as part of a broader programme to help young people become financially independent after leaving school.

According to him, the scheme would allow young people to start with self-contained apartments and gradually move into bigger housing spaces as their capacities grow.

The ADC candidate also promised to introduce legislation to protect tenants in Lagos from arbitrary rent increases by landlords.

“There must be a legislation that ensures that tenants are protected from arbitrary rent increases, at least giving six months notice before that happens, with a guidance of a percentage by which it can be increased. We are talking between 20 to 30 per cent,” he said.

He added that his administration would establish a feedback mechanism through which tenants could report landlords who violate the proposed law, assuring that the government would take action to ensure offenders are brought to justice.
