The Clásico Tapatío is already in the air at Verde Valle. With just a few days to go before Guadalajara faces its fiercest city rival at the Estadio Jalisco, Ángel Sepúlveda spoke to the media about the importance of the match, the responsibility of wearing the red-and-white jersey, and his desire to give the Red-and-White Nation something to celebrate.

The Rebaño striker emphasized that these matches hold special meaning because of everything they represent for Guadalajara, and said the team is ready to approach the fixture with the utmost seriousness, aiming to take all 3 points and show the pride that comes with representing Guadalajara.

On playing in the Clásico Tapatío

We’re always eager to play. We know what the Jalisco represents, and we respect our opponents, play our football, and always try to deliver the results the club expects. We know how important this game is, and we’re focused on getting the win. It’s always a privilege to know you’re at Chivas and get to play in these kinds of matches. You know how much they mean.

The Clásico Tapatío gets the whole city buzzing because of what it represents, and there’s pride in being part of it. The team wants to win and do things right. That’s why we’re motivated—we can’t wait for the game to arrive. We know it will be a tough match, but we want to enjoy it and give our fans something really special to celebrate. I don’t like planning anything. I’m someone who lives in the moment and goes with what I feel. The rivalry is there, and everyone knows Guadalajara is their home too. We make sure we’re respected, and we want to show who Chivas is in our city and at the Jalisco. We want to win, and the team is ready for that.

On El Clásico de México in Oakland and his brace

It’s always important to score. I always try to give my best and help my team; that’s the best way, and it’s the approach I’ve always taken. This is a very important match, and we’re treating it that way. We want those 3 points and to stay near the top of the table, and what better motivation than facing Atlas? We took that match very seriously. Even though it was a friendly, the team performed very well, and there’s nothing friendly about those games. We were coming off 2 matches that weren’t our best, and now we have this very important league game coming up, and we’re going to try to win it. We have the tools, and we have to back up any player who can’t be there because of injury or suspension.

I don’t focus on that. These matches are different and have a different feel to them. We’re focused on the team’s work, on keeping it up, and on winning. We have no other option or mindset. We hope it’s a great match for the fans and that we enjoy it too. Sometimes we say winning games is easy, but it isn’t. Losing hurts our pride because we want to be among the top teams in the table and we always want to win, but we’re working with the humility and sacrifice that it takes. We have no other option, and we’re going to do everything we can to make it happen.

With the hunger and desire to play this game, it’s always different. We’re focused on our work. We want to win and show that we’re in Guadalajara, that this is our home, and that our fans can feel represented on the pitch. We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing and doing things right, because it’s a Clásico. I think our focus is on Guadalajara and everything it represents. We know how big this match is, and we hope it’s a great game. They always want to beat us—that’s a fact—and we want to be ourselves and represent Chivas, to make the greatness of this badge felt.

On Chivas’s history at the Estadio Jalisco

I got to see Bofo’s goal, and if there were a list of historic moments, I’d include it without hesitation because it marked a turning point. He was an incredible player. I think we could definitely include it. We know what the Jalisco represents throughout the country and beyond. We want to enjoy it. I enjoy every game and try to give my best. These games have that spark, and I want to give everything and enjoy it so we can win this match.

On Diego Campillo and Raúl Rangel’s involvement with the national team

At the end of the day, these things are part of football. We’re human beings, and they know, without us having to say anything, that the whole team has their backs and how important they are to us. I think they’re players with very strong mentalities, and they won’t let this get them down. They’ll keep showing why they were called up to the national team.
