Watch Sean Payton’s emotional reaction to Drew Brees’ HOF call

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton showed a lot of emotion when upcoming Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees invited Payton to introduce him in Canton this summer.

Payton, who was in a bar with several friends and family, was on a video call with Brees in a video put out by the New Orleans Saints. Payton was visibly moved by the invitation from Brees, wiping tears from his eyes. “I’m honest to God, I can’t believe you just did that,” Payton is heard saying in the video. “Yeah, absolutely man. Listen, we’ve done enough of this all of the sudden — it’s awesome.”

“I can’t wait,” Brees said. “I love you.”

“Love you too,” Payton said. “Appreciate you.”

Payton spoke more about what the moment meant to him after Thursday’s practice.

“Listen, it caught me off guard,” Payton said after the Broncos‘ second day of pre-camp acclimation. “It was just a lot being 15 years together. Honestly, I remember talking to him later, a lot of times for a number of reasons, those quarterback-head coach relationships, you kind of always take for granted, and yet sometimes — oftentimes — they don’t end like you’d want them to end. I was really proud that it ended the way he wanted it to, so I’m excited for him. As a coach, it’s an honor that someone would ask you to do that.”

Brees masterminded how to ask Payton to introduce him into the Hall of Fame. According to Payton, his wife and the group he was with were in on the plan.

Payton and Brees will reunite next week in Canton. One day, Payton will undoubtedly receive his own gold jacket and join Brees inside the Hall of Fame.
