AUBURN — The 88,034 people that filled the stands of Jordan-Hare Stadium had been calling for Argentina’s Lionel Messi on multiple occasions after it was announced that he wasn’t in the starting lineup in the World Cup friendly against Iceland.

The chantings prevailed after Messi entered the match at the 70th minute on Tuesday, June 9, after a cooling break to an eruption of cheers that shook the air across campus.

Two minutes into Messi’s playing time on the pitch of Pat Dye Field, he delivered a well-timed looping pass that drew a foul inside of the goalie’s box, forcing a penalty kick.

None other than Messi lined up for the penalty kick for Argentina. He took two steps with his left foot before a brief hesitation, then booted the ball to the upper right corner of the goal. After spending 70 minutes on the bench for Argentina, Messi only needed two minutes to increase the lead over Iceland.
