Washington Commanders have Wes Welker now coaching tight ends

The Commanders have said Wes Welker will coach their tight ends “moving forward,” head coach Dan Quinn announced in a Tuesday press conference. While he didn’t formally name Welker, an offensive assistant, with the title of tight ends coach, but Quinn said that Welker will take over coaching the position group.

A change was necessary after the team dismissed Ben Steele on Monday. Per The Athletic’s Nick Jhabvala, Steele was let go for violating team policy. The change came more than a month after Steele was arrested on suspicion. of DWI. Per Virginia court records, Steele has since been charged with DWI, refusal to submit to a field blood/breath test, obstruction/resisting arrest without force and changing course without a signal.

Welker coached the Commanders tight ends during minicamp, while Steele was on leave. A permanent replacement was required after Steele was let go, and Welker was given the assignment

David Raih was promoted to passing game coordinator this offseason after two seasons coaching the tight ends, but he’ll remain in his current position.
