The Golden State Warriors had a lot of hype at the start of the offseason, with rumors swirling that they were going after LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, reality set in when it became apparent that they didn’t have enough to acquire either player.
The offseason then became somewhat disappointing, as they had to sign guys who had already been a part of the franchise before. Veteran center Kristaps Porzingis was one of them.
“The Golden State Warriors are bringing back veteran center Kristaps Porzingis on a two-year, $40 million contract with a player option on the second season, agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management told ESPN’s Shams Charania. Porzingis is extending his current contract, allowing him to negotiate and agree with the Warriors before hitting the open market on Tuesday afternoon,” ESPN’s Anthony Slater wrote.
Porzingis is a stretch big who allows the floor to open up for Golden State. However, at the beginning of training camp, it was announced that he had suffered an injury.
“Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely to open training camp with a health issue, per Warriors. Another immediate blow to their depth,” Slater posted.
For the Warriors, it is important that they get him back as soon as possible. The roster is already somewhat thin, with Jimmy Butler expected to miss at least half of the season. Golden State head coach Steve Kerr gave an injury update on Porzingis.
“Honestly, I just look at it as day to day. And we’re supporting him in every way that we can, with our performance staff, our training staff, doctors, and hopefully things can improve quickly and we’ll get him back,” Kerr said.
The Warriors are going to need him back as soon as possible. In today’s sports world, “day to day” can mean a variety of things. It can literally mean day to day, or it can turn into week to week.
Veteran big man Al Horford will likely be the starter for Golden State if Porzingis is not ready for the first game of the season. It will also give other players a chance to step up when the season gets here. Most importantly, though, it is a huge loss.
