The Golden State Warriors are adding a veteran coach to their staff to assist Steve Kerr in 2026-27. 

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Warriors have hired a 53-year-old former Los Angeles Lakers NBA champion coach.

“Longtime NBA coach Frank Vogel has agreed to become the associate head coach for the Golden State Warriors under head coach Steve Kerr,” Charania wrote on X/Twitter Sunday.

After spending three years with the Boston Celtics, one with the Philadelphia 76ers, and four with the Indiana Pacers as an assistant, Vogel received his big break in 2011. The Pacers promoted the Wildwood Crest, New Jersey native to head coach, and he led the organization to the Eastern Conference Finals twice in five seasons (they lost to the Miami Heat both times).

Vogel then served as the Orlando Magic‘s head coach for two seasons before landing a deal with the Lakers in 2019. Vogel, with the help of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, guided Los Angeles to their 17th ever championship in 2019-20, defeating the Heat in six hard-fought NBA Finals contests to capture the Larry O’Brien trophy.

However, Vogel lasted only two additional seasons in Los Angeles before being fired. The two-time All-Star game head coach then spent one season with the Phoenix Suns as the head coach and one with Dallas as an assistant before earning the associate head coaching position with Golden State.

Needless to say, Vogel’s experience should make him a valuable addition to the Kerr-led Warriors coaching staff.
