Dalton Knecht is entering just the third season of his career, and it already looks as though his time with the Los Angeles Lakers is close to ending. It might be getting to the point where a divorce may be what’s best for both sides.

Some Lakers feel as though Knecht is a tale of wasted potential. It wasn’t even that long ago when he was dropping huge games on the regular (he had two 30-point outings during his rookie campaign). And now, he appears to be the likeliest candidate to be the victim of the Lakers’ roster crunch, as LA needs to cut one player before the start of the 2026-27 NBA regular season.

For Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, he believes that nothing was truly the same for Knecht ever since the Lakers rescinded their trade for Mark Williams, which saw Knecht headed to the Charlotte Hornets, due to a failed physical.

“It’s crazy because Dalton Knecht seemed to like he had a little bit of promise to him, but after that trade that got voided by the Hornets to bring him in and send Mark Williams to the Lakers, the Lakers voided the trade because of Mark Williams’ back. Dalton Knecht just been in purgatory ever since and ultimately I think it ruined him,” Green said on the latest episode of “The Draymond Green Show”.

Prior to the failed trade for Williams, Knecht was averaging 9.4 points in over 20 minutes per game for the Lakers. In 84 games since then, Knecht averaged just 5.7 points in 12.5 minutes per contest as he found himself on the outside of the Lakers rotation for long stretches.

Green noted as well that Jaden Hardy and Bronny James have been outplaying the sharpshooter out of Tennessee in training camp. Many believe that Knecht is truly the odd man out for the Lakers, and teams in need of a microwave scorer would do well to take a flier on him if he hits the open market.
