Walter Keonig’s Last Star Trek Quote As Chekov Is His Most Important In History

· · 5 min read

Walter Koenig played a character named Chekov one last time in Star Trek: Picard season 3 and delivered his most hopeful and important quote in Star Trek history. Koenig passed away at 90 years old on Sunday, October 26, 2026. The Star Trek legend died of natural causes at his home in North Hollywood, California, and is fondly remembered by his peers and millions of fans.

Koenig is best known for playing Pavel Chekov, the Russian ensign and navigator of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series. Koenig joined in the second season, making 36 appearances in the original Star Trek as Chekov, who often claimed Russians were responsible for many of humanity’s greatest innovations. Walter candidly claimed that he was cast in Star Trek because of his passing resemblance to The Monkees‘ Davy Jones, and Chekov was meant to appeal to younger viewers.

Chekov’s most well-known moments came in the Star Trek movies. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan gave Koenig his meatiest dramatic material as Chekov, while Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home showcased Walter’s comedic skills, where he improvised Chekov asking San Francisco residents where the “nuclear wessels” were in 1986. Koenig’s final canonical appearance as Commander Chekov was his cameo at the start of 1994’s Star Trek Generations.

Walter Koenig’s Last Quote As Chekov Made Star Trek History

Walter Koenig’s surprise cameo in the series finale of Star Trek: Picard is, in hindsight, his most important quote as Chekov. However, Koenig wasn’t playing Pavel, his legendary character. Instead, Walter voiced Anton Chekov, the President of the United Federation of Planets at the dawn of the 25th century. Written by Picard showrunner and director Terry Matalas, Koenig’s words as Anton Chekov are inspiring:

“This is President Anton Chekov of the United Federation of Planets broadcasting on all emergency channels. Do not approach Earth. A signal of unknown origin has turned our young against us. They have been assimilated by the Borg. Our fleet has been compromised and as we speak, our planetary defenses are falling. Sol Station is defending Earth as best it can. But we’re almost out of time. We have not been able to find a way to stop this Borg signal and unassimilate our young.

But I know if my father were here, he’d remind us all that hope is never lost. There are always possibilities. Until then, I implore you: Save yourselves. Farewell.”

Star Trek: Picard season 3’s finale, “The Last Generation,” was the only time that Walter Koenig played a Chekov who wasn’t Pavel in Star Trek canon. Going by the President’s speech, Anton is the son of Pavel Chekov. Further, playing Anton was the first time that Koenig played a Chekov without his exaggerated and iconic Russian accent.

Although President Chekov’s subspace warning about the Borg assimilating every Starfleet officer 25 years old and under was dire, Anton paraphrased his father. The President evoked Pavel’s belief that “Hope is never lost. There are always possibilities.” This was the personal philosophy Pavel Chekov lived by, an outlook he learned from his peers, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy).

In 2023, Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas shared his delight at Walter Koenig playing President Chekov on The 7th Rule, the podcast where Koenig reviewed his 1960s Star Trek episodes: “How awesome was that? I’ll tell you, from a fan perspective, to write and direct the finale of that magnitude, and then to have him be part of it… I wish it was on camera… We ran out of time… It’s that feeling. I’m just thrilled that he did it for us, and we were able to get some Original Series DNA at the end there. It makes it feel like Star Trek.”

Star Trek Has Lost Both Chekov Actors 10 Years Apart

Tragically, both actors who played Pavel Chekov in Star Trek have now passed away 10 years apart. On June 19, 2016, 27-year-old Anton Yelchin was killed in a tragic accident. Yelchin took over the role of Ensign Chekov in the alternate Kelvin timeline of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies, playing the young Russian hero in 2009’s Star Trek, 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.

President Anton Chekov in Star Trek: Picard season 3 was named for Yelchin, as a tribute to the beloved young actor. It fittingly melded the two Chekovs and their legacies. Walter Koenig met and spent time with Anton, and had nothing but praise for the talented younger man who carried on Pavel Chekov’s legacy.

Koenig and Yelchin may be the last actors to play Pavel Chekov.

Unless Pavel Chekov is recast and makes a surprise appearance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ fifth and final season, Koenig and Yelchin may be the last actors to play Pavel Chekov. Star Trek: The Original Series may not be rebooted again in the foreseeable future, and had Star Trek 4 been made, producer J.J. Abrams would not have recast Chekov. Walter also makes Star Trek history by playing Chekov and then voicing his son.

Under its new owners, Skydance, Star Trek‘s future is an open question that has fans understandably concerned. However, Walter Koenig’s last words as Chekov in Star Trek are a fitting legacy, and a necessary reminder not to lose hope, and that there are always possibilities.
