The Minnesota Vikings received the news they feared Sunday, as veteran safety Jamal Adams is expected to miss the entire 2026 season because of a knee injury suffered during Saturday night’s preseason opener against the New York Giants.
Adams sustained the injury during the second quarter in East Rutherford, New Jersey, delivering a significant blow to a Minnesota defense that appeared to have found an important role for the veteran.
The injury occurred while Adams was defending receiver Calvin Austin III. Adams dropped from the line of scrimmage into coverage as Austin worked across the field. The safety slipped while attempting to react and remained on the turf for an extended period.
Adams eventually went into the medical tent before being taken from the field on a cart.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell acknowledged following the game that the team’s initial evaluation was concerning. Those fears were confirmed Sunday.
“I told the team after the game, ‘This guy has come in and impacted our organization,'” O’Connell said Saturday. “He’s energy every day. Affecting people in a positive way. We’ve absolutely loved his play style, his competes. And he was genuinely carving out a significant role for himself by totally being all in on the process.”
Adams suffers heartbreaking setback
For Adams, the injury represents another difficult setback in a career that has been repeatedly interrupted by health issues.
The former All-Pro entered training camp attempting to establish himself as an important piece of Minnesota’s secondary. His physical playing style and ability to contribute near the line of scrimmage gave the Vikings another potential weapon defensively.
Now Minnesota must move forward without him.
Losing Adams before the regular season begins creates another decision for the Vikings as they evaluate their safety depth and determine how to replace the snaps Adams was expected to receive.
Preseason games are designed to help teams answer roster questions, but Minnesota left Saturday night facing one it never wanted.
Adams had earned praise from his coaches, built momentum throughout camp and appeared headed toward a meaningful role.
Instead, his 2026 season has ended before it could officially begin.
