Valencia explores January loan for Edson Alvarez

Valencia is considering a January loan for Edson Alvarez after meeting his agency’s representative, according to La Colina de Nervion.

Tarek Sebiat met Valencia sporting director Braulio Vazquez at Paterna on Wednesday. His agency also represents Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira, another player known to Javier Aguirre.

Alvarez, 28, is under contract with West Ham until June 2028. The report says he has yet to play in the Championship this season, with his competitive involvement limited to 75 minutes in the League Cup.

A loan would allow Valencia to pursue the former Ajax player without committing to a permanent transfer fee. His wages and West Ham’s conditions would still need to be settled, and no official offer has been announced.

Aguirre’s presence provides a connection. Valencia appointed the former Mexico coach in September on a contract through the end of the season, with an option for another year. He arrived after leading Mexico to the last 16 of the World Cup, taking over a club that had collected four points from its first seven league games.

Alvarez joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and made 73 appearances across his first two seasons in England, contributing two goals and three assists before moving to Fenerbahce on loan for the 2025-26 campaign. The Turkish club’s agreement included an option to make the deal permanent.

His work with Aguirre included a successful 2025 Gold Cup. Alvarez was named player of the tournament and scored the winning goal against the United States in the final, heading home with 13 minutes remaining. That was his second goal in six appearances at the tournament.

Lira would require a different arrangement. The 26-year-old is contracted to Cruz Azul until 2029, and La Colina de Nervion reports that a move for him would involve negotiating a permanent transfer with the Mexican club.
