‘Utter disgust’: Fans react to Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe amid Ceuta shirt controversy during Elche clash

· · 2 min read

Fans have reacted strongly after Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe and Ibrahima Konate did not fully display a pre-match shirt supporting Ceuta before Real Madrid’s clash with Elche.

The players wore the shirts rolled up around their chests, meaning the “Todos somos caballas” message was not visible, while Vinicius and Mbappe removed theirs before the pre-match handshake.

The gesture was part of a LaLiga initiative that saw players from Elche and Real Madrid wear the shirts in support of Ceuta. Real Madrid had accepted the proposal, while reports said the club respected individual player sensitivities over whether to display the message.

The footage quickly spread across social media, with supporters expressing anger over the decision not to show the message while others questioned the wider debate surrounding the initiative.

One fan wrote: “That support message should have been visible.”

Another was far more critical, saying: “I hope they boo them until the day they leave Real Madrid, utter disgust.”

A third supporter called for disciplinary action, writing: “I hope Florentino fines them with 3 months’ suspension without a job or pay. That way, the nonsense would end quickly. They’re way too full of themselves.”

The criticism continued, with one fan writing: “Shame that @realmadrid allows this contempt toward our compatriots from Ceuta by these millionaires who live in luxurious gated communities with private security”

Another brought Vinicius’ own experiences into the discussion, saying: “In all the matches Vini receives racist insults and the federation does nothing and they want me to support Spain? Pedro Sánchez doesn’t support Ceuta either and I don’t see them flooding their social media with that news!”

One supporter also questioned the leadership at Real Madrid, writing: “Real Madrid is missing a captain (Spanish) who has some balls and puts a stop to these spoiled millionaire kid behaviors with their feet off the ground. In any case, the club must sanction them, at the very least. I hope Real Madrid rises to the occasion as an institution.”

Not everyone viewed the decision in the same way, however. One fan wrote: “You can’t mix politics with football. A round of applause for those cracks”

The controversy comes after similar shirts were worn during other LaLiga fixtures, with the initiative generating debate beyond the pitch.

Real Madrid beat Elche 3-2 after a stoppage time goal from Carlos Espi. They sit second on the La Liga table with 15 points in six games so far.

Jose Mourinho and the team will be taking on arch-rivals Atletico Madrid this weekend.
