The United States says it could reach an agreement with Iran within the next two days to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ease tensions in the region.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said negotiations with Iranian officials were ongoing and expressed optimism that a deal could be reached soon.

“We are in talks with the Iranians, and I think there is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the strait and move towards a more normalised position in this conflict,” Bessent said in an interview with CNBC.

When asked whether Iran would be allowed to collect tolls from ships using the waterway, Bessent said the agreement would guarantee free passage.

“It would be freedom of movement,” he said. “Even though things are still a little dicey there over the past few days, we saw quite a few ships coming out even now.”
