United States President Donald Trump has identified two major factors behind his Republican Party’s loss to the Democrats in the recently concluded midterm elections.

Speaking during an interview with FOX News on Wednesday, Trump blamed the Iran war and rising gasoline prices for the party’s poor electoral performance.

He maintained that although Americans supported his decision to take action against Iran, they were unwilling to bear the immediate economic consequences, particularly the increase in fuel costs.

“People agree with what I’m doing on Iran but they probably weren’t willing to do the short the early consequence of paying more for gasoline.”

Trump had earlier congratulated the Democrats on their electoral victory but maintained that the Republican Party’s defeat should not be interpreted as a rejection of his leadership.

DAILY POST reports that the Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate, for the remaining period of Trump’s presidency.

The midterm elections produced surprising outcomes, with several states that had traditionally supported the Republicans recording victories for the Democrats.
