UN backs merger of UNITAR, UNSSC, approves new learning institute

Speaking to journalists at the UN Headquarters, the organisation’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the General Assembly’s decision.

Dujarric said the move recognised continuous learning, capability development and innovation as essential to the UN’s ability to implement reforms and deliver effectively for member states.

He added that the Secretary-General had encouraged member states, UN agencies, development partners and other stakeholders to participate in shaping the direction of the new institution.

The transition to the new structure will be carried out in stages until the end of 2026, with UNITAR and UNSSC continuing their existing operations during the transition period.

The new institute will be based in Geneva. Meanwhile, Turin will retain its role as a UN learning campus and leadership development centre.

Existing operations in Bonn, Hiroshima, Madrid and New York are also expected to continue under the new arrangement.

The merger is among the latest measures being implemented under the UN80 Initiative, which was introduced to support reforms aimed at creating a more responsive, streamlined and future-oriented United Nations.

The new institution is expected to provide a broader platform for strengthening skills, leadership, innovation and institutional capacity among UN personnel, member states and other partners.
