UConn's Dan Hurley blasts late signings after court ruling

· · 2 min read

UConn head coach Dan Hurley has never been one to hold back his opinions, and he spoke out about the recent flurry of transfer portal action and signings after a Colorado court granted an injunction to allow athletes from the 2022 high school class to play a fifth year.

Hurley is not a fan of the programs that have signed players at this late point on the calendar.

“If you’re a coach and the sport has given you a lot, it’s like doing things to hurt the sport so that you can win a little bit more,” Hurley said to ESPN with regard to fifth-year players taking away opportunities from 17- and 18-year-old freshmen. “I think you’ve got to be able to look in the mirror on that, especially if the sport has given you a lot already.”

Hurley said he will not be adding any players in this unexpected August transfer window, and spoke about the chaos that the ruling has caused.

“You put together the best team you can,” Hurley said. “You start practicing for the summer, and now let’s unleash 80 players into the sport in the first week of August. I mean, we can’t go on like this.”
