Ty Simpson finally signs contract with Rams just before training camp

· · 1 min read

The Los Angeles Rams‘ top draft pick of 2026 is just about under contract. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, first-round rookie Ty Simpson has finally agreed to his four-year deal with the team and is signing his contract. Simpson was drafted 13th overall out of Alabama, joining the Rams as a potential successor to Matthew Stafford.

Simpson was one of just a few draft picks who remained unsigned this late in the offseason. He was likely waiting for Fernando Mendoza to sign his contract, which happened on Thursday when Raiders rookies reported to camp.

The #Rams and No. 13 overall pick Ty Simpson have agreed to terms on his rookie contract and he is signing his four-year, $25.4M fully guaranteed deal with a fifth-year option. He gets a $14.94M signing bonus in a deal done by Ed Berry of @caa_sports. pic.twitter.com/Gesekuse8N

Because Simpson was a first-round pick, his contract comes with a fifth-year option for 2030. The Rams must exercise that option by May of 2029 in order to keep Simpson under contract for the final year of his rookie deal – albeit, at a much higher cost than the first four years.

Based on the rookie wage scale, Simpson’s contract is worth a fully guaranteed $25.4 million over four years, including a $14.94 million signing bonus.

The Rams stood pat at No. 13 and selected Simpson, a surprising move to many. It was the pick acquired in last year’s trade down from the first round, a deal they made with the Atlanta Falcons during the 2025 draft.

Simpson will compete with Stetson Bennett to be Stafford’s backup this season.
