Jake Heyward and Charlotte Henrich have set new Welsh records while competing in the London Diamond League.

Heyward, 27, broke his own one-mile record with a new personal best time of three minutes 46.73 seconds as he finished third in a race which saw Britain’s Josh Kerr set a new world record.

That is an improvement of more than five seconds on the 3:51.99 he ran in May 2022, and arrives months after his return to competitive racing.

The Cardiff native spent nearly four years away from competitive races due to Achilles injuries before making his comeback in May.

Heyward has been selected by Team Wales for the Commonwealth Games, which take place in Glasgow this summer.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Henrich, 19, broke the Welsh 400m record for the second time in less than a month.

Henrich ran a new personal best of 50.45 seconds, shaving 0.13 seconds off the previous record she set in June, as she finished eighth.

The teenager has twice beaten the 44-year Welsh record set by Michelle Scutt, which had stood since 1982.

Henrich, who has improved by nearly a second in 2026, has timed these personal bests well ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

She will be competing for Wales in the 400m and previously won silver at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in 2023.

Wales’ fastest man, Jeremiah Azu, finished eighth in the 100m sprint – which was won by Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi – with a time of 10.07 seconds.
