Two Ohio State golfers qualify for this year's U.S. Open Championship

· · 2 min read

A program like Ohio State that once had Jack Nicklaus stomping around Columbus as a collegiate amateur golfer should continue to send guys to the highest level of golf, and we have seen some of that in the most recent years.

Another example of that is news that two former OSU golfers have qualified for the 2026 U.S. Open. Neal Shipley and Vaughn Harber both did enough in a marathon 36-hole qualifying format to be included in the field that will play at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, from June 18 through 21.

The two former Buckeyes played 18 holes at Springfield Country Club and then The Lakes Golf and Country Club. Shipley carded a 3-under 67, then a 5-under 65 to finish with a best 8-under to make it through final qualifying.

Harber, who is still at Ohio State as a rising junior, did enough at the Lakes in Westerville, shot a 3-under in the morning, then followed it up with a 2-under 68 to force a four-man playoff that he won for the final qualifying spot. It’ll be the first major of his career.

So, while you tune into the U.S. Open this year, you’ll have a little scarlet and gray to root for along with the other notables. Good luck to both!
