Türkiye 3-2 United States: Co-hosts lose dead rubber in 98th minute

Türkiye ended a disappointing World Cup campaign on a high with a last-minute winner to beat co-hosts United Stated 3-2 in an entertaining final Group D clash.

Auston Trusty got USMNT up and running after just three minutes from a set piece before Real Madrid teenager Arda Güler equalized with his first goal of the tournament and Baris Yilmaz completed turned the game on its head.

Sebastian Berhalter took just as long as Trusty to restore the lead after the break, but Kaan Ayhan dug out a winner in the 98th minute to deny Mauricio Pochettino a point before his side’s round of 32 clash with Bosnia and Herzegovina next Thursday.

Trusty was first denied by Gurcan Çakir from the corner that led to the 27-year-old deftly controlling Berhalter’s delivery and firing across goal and in to punish some poor marking from the Crescent Stars.

But they were back level within the first 10, when Güler received Yilmaz’s reverse pass and capped off a good move through the middle with a tidy finish under Matt Turner.

Türkiye were almost the architects of their own downfall again from a set-piece by centre-back Mark McKenzie tapping in the rebound to Ricardo Pepi’s point-blank effort, but he was caught in an offside position.

They responded in the perfect fashion, passing their way up to the US penalty area for Güler to play a neat ball in behind to Eren Elmali and Orkun Kökcü’s stab towards goal deflected in off Yilmaz, who claimed the goal that stunned Pochettion’s men.

The co-hosts had seen a pattern emerging in the first half and took full advantage with McKenzie’s long throw causing all sorts of trouble as Türkiye could only clear as far as Berhalter on the edge of the box.

He had no hesitation in striking it first time on the half-volley and through the crowd to beat the goalkeeper at his near post.

USMNT mounted a very promising attack with a switch to Christian Pulisic on his return from a minor injury, which the winger failed to capitalize on firing an effort across goal, and then saw his looping effort tipped onto the post.

It proved fatal, as Türkiye kept believing right until the very last and sealed a positive end to an otherwise disappointing World Cup campaign when a low ball across goal from Can Uzun was slotted home by Ayhan up from the back.

Güler played a starring role with some brilliant feet to get the ball out of a tight spot in the opposite corner, in what many considered his team more than capable of doing more than once during the group stage yet ultimately fell short of their ambition.

As for the US, they enter into the round of 32 with first taste of defeat on home soil but could be on for good things should they continue their good habit of getting themselves ahead early on.
