Trump claims Iran backed deal before drone strike in Strait of Hormuz, calls Tehran ‘sick’

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran agreed to a major agreement with Washington shortly before allegedly launching a drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the action as evidence that the Iranian leadership is “sick.”

Speaking during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump said U.S. officials had held talks with Iranian representatives and believed a deal had been reached before the reported attack occurred.

“We had meetings with them. They agreed to a deal yesterday, a perfect deal for us. No nuclear. They gave up everything, and then, within an hour, they launched a drone at a ship,” Trump said.

The president did not specify the nature of the agreement or provide further details about the negotiations.

Reacting to the reported attack, Trump accused Iran of acting irrationally.

“I said, ‘You people are sick,’ and so it’s one of those things,” he remarked.

Trump also maintained that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to international shipping despite Iranian claims to the contrary. He further asserted that the U.S. military responded forcefully to the incident.

“We bombed the hell out of them last night,” he said, without providing additional details.

During the interview, Trump also reflected on the death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, revealing that he had spoken with the South Carolina lawmaker shortly before his passing.

According to the president, Graham appeared slightly fatigued but was otherwise in good spirits during their final conversation.

“He sounded a little tired, but perfect,” Trump said.

Recalling their political relationship, Trump noted that although Graham had initially opposed his 2016 presidential bid, the two later developed a close alliance.

“I got to know him during the campaign. He said, ‘I’ll see you in South Carolina.’ But when it came to South Carolina, I won it by a lot,” Trump said.

Expressing shock over the senator’s death, the president added, “I thought he was just going to live forever.”
