Trevor Lawrence details how tight end room can be advantage for Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have invested in the tight end position this offseason, selecting Nate Boerkircher in the second round of the NFL draft and Tanner Koziol in the fifth round.

These decisions, specifically taking Boerkircher at pick 56, have often been criticized by NFL analysts.

But with Brenton Strange already on the roster, what the Jaguars have built out is a deep tight end room, with several well-rounded skill sets. And all of that can be an advantage for the offense as Trevor Lawrence recently explained.

“I think having a well-rounded tight end room is super important,” Lawrence said, “because you talk about all the different personnel groupings when you’re trying to get a certain defensive personnel on the field, and you have the ability to still throw the ball, whether it’s 12 or 13 (personnel), you still have a real threat in the pass game. And that’s important because then you can dictate what happens with the defense a little bit more. And when you don’t, it’s a little bit harder; you get a little bit more easier to track what you’re doing, as far as running the ball, tendencies, and all that, so I think that’s going to help us with our tendencies. Going to be able to do a lot of different things run game and pass game with the versatile tight ends we have.”

By utilizing more two and three tight end sets, the Jaguars can put opposing defenses in a bind. Either the opponent has to match personnel, at which point the Jaguars should have the matchup advantage with their tight ends able to make plays in the passing game. Or, if defenses don’t match the Jaguars’ heavier personnel groupings, Jacksonville then has the size advantage on the field.

With Strange and Boerkircher both able to impact the run and passing games, that adds a level of unpredictability to the offense. It becomes very difficult for defenses to get a bead on what’s coming with those two players able to fill so many roles.

While many have questioned the Jaguars’ roster-building approach this offseason, James Gladstone and Liam Coen have a clear plan in place for how they want to attack defenses this season.
