Former Manchester United striker, Michael Owen, has urged the club to disregard regulations and ensure that Bruno Fernandes remains at Old Trafford this summer.

Owen regards the Portuguese player as the club’s most vital asset at present, encouraging the Red Devils to exert all efforts to secure the midfielder with a new contract.

With the Portugal international’s contract set to expire in 2027, Owen asserts that the Red Devils must extend his agreement.

Since his transfer from Sporting CP in January 2020, Fernandes has excelled for the Red Devils. He had an outstanding season last year, setting a new record for the most assists in a Premier League season with 21.

Michael Owen has stated that Manchester United should provide their star midfielder with a new contract, irrespective of his age.

The former England international said, as reported by Sportskeeda, “If I were Manchester United, I would certainly do everything possible. There are rules and regulations and considerations that come into play.

“You might think, ‘Well, he’s of a certain age, and you shouldn’t be paying this, you shouldn’t be offering long contracts, you shouldn’t do this.’ However, at times, a player is so crucial, so essential, that I believe you must occasionally bend the rules.

“If I were Manchester United, I couldn’t imagine starting the season without him. He is that important. Disregard his age, overlook everything else. He is indispensable if they wish to continue their advancement.”

Fernandes has arguably been the most significant signing for the Red Devils since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. To date, he has made 327 appearances for the club, netting 107 goals and providing 108 assists.
