Warning! Spoilers ahead for Tracker season 4, episode 5, “Need To Know.”Early in its current run, Tracker officially pits Colter Shaw against his worst enemy in the history of the series. While Justin Hartley enters CBS’s fall 2026 cycle behind Marshals in terms of ratings, the show continues to deliver week after week following the previous year’s shake-up. For context, the Tracker season 3 finale wrapped up Ashton Shaw’s death mystery while also kicking off a new arc for Colter with the introduction of his new home base. Admittedly, none of those lingering plot threads have been actively tackled this cycle, with the show focusing on its procedural aspect.
After four episodes of focusing on its weekly cases, Tracker season 4 changes things up with “Need To Know,” as it marks the first appearance of Russell Shaw this year. Jensen Ackles is the most prominent recurring character in the project, and has been returning every year since it premiered in 2024. Tracker season 3 increased his prominence by bringing him back multiple times after only appearing once in the first two years. What comes after his latest comeback remains uncertain, which makes it all the more pivotal.

Tracker season 4, episode 4 re-teams the Shaw brothers for the first time since solving their father’s mysterious death. In “Need To Know,” Russell calls his younger brother for help tracking down a missing mother and daughter that is tied to a bigger military conspiracy. Despite months of getting barely any contact, Colter doesn’t think twice to help, as he uses his noticeably more heightened skills to find the abducted duo. As expected, the Shaw brothers get the job done neatly, with Reenie coming in to help with the legalities of their actions.
However, even after the whole debacle is over, Russell still refuses to come clean about his betrayal in the Tracker season 3 finale. For context, McIntyre effectively blackmailed him into doing his bidding after being presented with damning information about Colter and Ashton. Instead of coming clean to his brother, Russell opted to skip town. If it wasn’t for his friend’s crisis in “Need To Know,” it’s likely that he would have continued to elude Colter, which only makes his disloyalty worse. The longer he sits on his secret, the worse the fallout will likely be.
Why Russell’s Betrayal Makes Him Colter’s Worst Enemy In Tracker Thus Far

It goes without saying that Russell’s Tracker season 3 actions were motivated by love for his brother. He deemed that whatever was in that document that McIntyre handed to him was going to be detrimental to his brother’s life that he opted to hide it from him. However, his intentions don’t make it correct, especially in light of their family history. For years, the Shaw brothers kept themselves separated from each other because of a lie, so being honest is vital to their relationship.
What makes this situation much trickier is that Reenie is involved in Russell’s betrayal. While it doesn’t seem like she is aware of the specifics of the situation, the fact that she is keeping Colter’s brother’s secret from him is a major breach of trust. Hartley’s character is great in terms of reading scenarios and sniffing out bad guys, but bar his personal skills, he heavily relies on his small circle of trusted people. Russell involving Reenie in hiding this massive secret from him threatens the collapse of his team dynamic.
At this point, Colter still trusts his big brother unequivocally. He may be worried about his disappearance, but it doesn’t seem like he has the slightest idea that the reason why Russell has been pulling away is that he’s hiding a secret from him. The fact that Colter continues to be oblivious to everything happening makes the inevitable reckoning of this plot more intense, to the point that it could change Tracker‘s future.
