Tottenham’s summer spending ‘not finished yet’, De Zerbi reveals

Roberto De Zerbi has insisted Tottenham’s summer transfer business is not finished yet, despite already spending over £270m on new signings. 

Following back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League, Spurs have begun their rebuild under De Zerbi, smashing their club record by buying Sandro Tonali for £100m.

Tonali’s move from Newcastle United came after Spurs had already announced the £85m arrival of Mateus Fernandes from relegated West Ham. 

Jan Paul van Hecke has also reunited with De Zerbi for a reported £52m fee, while Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have all joined on free transfers. 

Spurs have recouped some of the money they have spent with the sales of Will Lankshear and Luka Vuskovic, though De Zerbi is hoping there is still plenty more business to be done before their Premier League campaign begins on August 22.

“I think we are building a very good team, with some very important new players, and we are starting the project in another part of the history of the club,” De Zerbi said. 

“I spent a lot of time [understanding the club] before joining in April and I knew very well the ideas of the owner of the club and the plan was clear before the Everton game.

“Now we are inside [the project], we are excited about the idea of building a very strong team.

“Now we have to finish, as it’s not finished yet, our transfer market, in and out, but at the moment I’m very happy, very proud and very positive.”

Spurs are reportedly interested in signing Marcus Rashford, who spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Barcelona, though they face competition from Arsenal and Chelsea. 

Celtic’s Arne Engels is also a name linked with a move to London, while Djed Spence is attracting interest after impressing for England at this summer’s World Cup. 

Both Inter and Everton have been credited with an interest in Spence, who made 44 appearances for Spurs across all competitions last season. 

However, De Zerbi’s focus remains on turning Spurs’ fortunes around, and he is hoping the club can quickly challenge at the top of the Premier League. 

“I think Tottenham deserves to compete for the top of the Premier League,” De Zerbi added. 

“I know very well the Premier League is very tough, but if you have good motivation inside the players, good organisation on the pitch and outside the pitch, I think you work well and in the end you reach your target.”

Spurs begin their campaign with a trip to Brentford before facing Newcastle United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 29.
