Tottenham had ‘profound impact’ on Palhinha as he bids farewell

Joao Palhinha has confirmed he will not be making the move to Tottenham from Bayern Munich permanent.

Palhinha spent the 2025-26 season on loan in north London, making 45 appearances in all competitions and playing a key role in ensuring they avoided relegation from the Premier League.

He was their hero on the final day, with his goal securing a 1-0 win over Everton that secured their top-flight status.

Palhinha won his team five points via goals scored in the Premier League in 2025-26; it was the joint-most by any player for Tottenham (also five for Richarlison).

He netted seven goals overall, a tally only bettered by Richarlison (12), while also getting one assist.

“I am writing this message with heartfelt gratitude for all the kindness and support you have always shown me throughout my time at this special club,” Palhinha said in a social media post addressed to Spurs fans.

“Representing Tottenham has had a profound impact on my life, not only professionally but also personally, and it is something I will carry with me forever.

“I always tried to repay, in the best way I could, all the affection, respect and trust you showed me, both on and off the pitch.

“As I have said before, what truly defines a great institution and a great football club is its supporters. Players, managers and directors come and go, but the fans remain. You are the ones who keep the flame of this club burning, season after season.

“London gave me more than a professional career; it gave me two homes that I will always carry in my heart. With the utmost respect and gratitude, I say goodbye to all of you.”

Spurs had the option to make Palhinha’s move permanent, with reports suggesting he could stay in London for £25.9m (€30m).

And the Portugal international had been keen on staying at Tottenham, saying in May that he felt “at home”.

However, they have already announced the £85m signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, with Sandro Tonali also set to join in a deal reportedly worth £100m.

Palhinha is now expected to return to his boyhood club, Sporting CP.
