The 28-year-old has been on the radar of multiple clubs, but it appears that Atletico Madrid are now the frontrunners to sign the player. According to Luca Bendoni from Sky Sports, Atletico Madrid are in talks with Tottenham over a potential move for the Argentina international, and the two parties are making progress over a potential deal.

Bendoni wrote on X: “Atletico Madrid and Tottenham are closing in on a fee for Cuti Romero. Still no green light, but parties in talks and making progress. Crucial hours ahead.”

The 28-year-old has been excellent for Tottenham since joining the club, and he helped him win the UEFA Europa League. However, he will want to compete at a higher level and fight for league titles and the UEFA Champions League now.

He is certainly one of the best defenders in the league, and he could prove to be an asset for Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone will be hoping to tighten up at the back, and the South American will certainly help them improve.

Romero has helped his country with major trophies, and there is no doubt that he has the ability to succeed in La Liga as well. He has previously proven himself in Italy and England.

Romero is at the peak of his career, and this is the right time for him to try out a new challenge. Tottenham have been fighting for survival in the last couple of seasons, and Romero will be tempted to move on.

Tottenham have already brought in a potential replacement for him when they signed Jan Paul van Hecke. They are unlikely to stand in his way if a suitable offer is presented.
