Top Dodgers Prospect Falls Just Short of Minor League On-Base Record

Mike Sirota fell just two games shy of setting a new Minor League on-base record on Friday night. Going into the game, the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ No. 2 overall prospect had a 72-game on-base streak.

Infielder Andrew Velazquez set the Minor League on-base record at 74 games in 2024 with the Arizona Diamondbacks‘ Single-A South Bend. The MLB record is still held by Hall of Famer Ted Williams, who made it on base for 84 straight games in 1949.

“I wasn’t even aware of it (the record) until about 40 or 50 games in,” Sirota told NBC Sports. “When I first heard about it, I kind of just brushed it off. I was just trying to play my game, but obviously, more recently, I’ve been thinking about it a little more.”

Even though Sirota ultimately fell short of the record, he said knowing he was close to breaking the record taught him how to handle pressure.

“I’m learning about myself from it,” he said before the Futures Game, per NBC Sports. “How to deal with this kind of stuff mentally. I’ve never had to deal with something like this before…Each at bat means a little more, I guess you could say. But meaning a little more could be a good thing. Obviously, with the extra added pressure to it, the extra adrenaline, I think it makes me better every time I go out there…Using it to take a little bit more adrenaline in each at bat, learning how to harness that, and use it to my advantage. It’s been great.”

Sirota is projected to make his MLB debut in 2027. But the 23-year-old has been on the Dodgers’ radar for multiple years.

The Dodgers initially drafted Sirota in the 16th round of the 2021 MLB Draft. Then, Sirota decided to fulfill his commitment to Northeastern before entering the 2024 MLB Draft. The Cincinnati Reds drafted Sirota in the third round in 2024.

Los Angeles later traded Gavin Lux to Cincinnati for Sirota and Competitive Balance Round A Pick in January 2025. Since then, Sirota earned a promotion to Double-A in May and has played 43 games with the Tulsa Drillers.
