Tom Moore announces retirement after 21 years with UConn

After a near-four decade career including 21 years working at UConn, Tom Moore has announced his retirement. Most recently serving as the general manager for the men’s basketball program, Moore was an assistant coach for four national championship teams (1999, 2004, 2023 & 2024) under legendary coaches Jim Calhoun and Dan Hurley.

“It has been an honor to spend my entire professional life coaching college basketball,” Moore said in a press release on Thursday. “I’d like to thank all the players I’ve coached and all the men I’ve shared the sideline with. Every one of you hold a special place in my heart. My family has made tremendous sacrifices to support my career and I could not have done this without them. Sincere thanks to Coach Calhoun and Coach Hurley for believing in me at the beginning and conclusion of my coaching career. To work alongside two of the greatest coaches in college basketball history was a blessing I could have never imagined when I began this journey. UConn Nation, I am forever grateful to have been a small part of the Basketball Capital of the World for two decades.”

Moore first got to UConn for the 1994-95 season as an assistant to Calhoun, a position he held for 13 years. He won two of his titles alongside Calhoun and helped develop some of the greatest players and teams in program history including Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton and Emeka Okafor, amongst others.

After his first stint in Storrs, Moore got his first and only Division I head coaching gig when he took the job at Quinnipiac. Across 10 seasons in Hamden, he won 162 games and guided his team to four postseason tournaments. Following his stint with the Bobcats, he spent one year as an assistant under Hurley at Rhode Island, coaching a Rams team that won 26 games and helped secure Hurley the UConn job the next season.

Moore followed Hurley to Connecticut, starting his second and final stint with the Huskies. Moore sat on the UConn bench as an assistant for the next seven seasons, winning two more titles and developing even more talent including Donovan Clingan, Stephon Castle and Jordan Hawkins, and was widely known for his ability to develop elite offensive rebounders such as Clingan and Adama Sanogo.

“I can’t thank Tom enough for his dedication to the Connecticut basketball program through the years,” Hurley said. “He has been a loyal and trusted assistant to me for the last decade and is a true UConn man. Tom has been tantamount to our success as he took on a crucial role helping to navigate the new era of college basketball. His insight both on and off the court led to great success as UConn’s first general manager, helping build the rosters that led to the winningest run in program history.”

This past season, he moved off of the bench and to the scorer’s table where he served as the team’s general manager, doing more work behind the scenes with NIL to help recruit players to the program. In his lone season in that position, Moore assisted in bringing in a transfers Silas Demary Jr. and Malachi Smith from the portal, the point guard duo that helped lead the team to the national championship game in Indianapolis.

Moore also helped construct the roster for this upcoming season that features 10 newcomers. With the news of his retirement, UConn announced that they will be conducting a national search for a new GM for the 2026-27 season.
