The Detroit Pistons wanted to retain Tobias Harris in free agency, but ultimately he spurned the Pistons in favor of signing with the San Antonio Spurs on a two-year, $31 million contract.

In an exchange with HoopsHype, Harris provided some insight into his decision to leave Detroit for San Antonio. The 33-year old cited urgency in his desire to win a championship as a driving factor.

“The urgency to win a championship,” Harris said. “It felt like both our goals aligned.”

Clearly, Harris thinks that the Spurs are closer to raising a banner than the Pistons are. But while Harris decided to sign elsewhere, he leaves Detroit with very fond memories of his time as a Piston.

“Extreme gratitude to come in here and be a part of the historic rebuild. The friendships and relationships you build, the chemistry we were able to cultivate as a collective group, and the teamwork we were able to establish with players and coaches,” Harris said.

“It was truly remarkable those two years. I had a ton of joy and fun playing the game, so I am grateful for that. You always cherish all those memories that we were able to make happen.”

San Antonio will be Harris’ sixth franchise, joining Milwaukee, Orlando, L.A. (Clippers), Philadelphia and Detroit.
