‘This Is Tom Brady to Tampa’ – Analyst Defends LeBron James’ 76ers Move by Shooting Down ‘Ring Chasing’ Narrative
Friday’s blockbuster NBA news that LeBron James will play for the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2026-27 season prompted many to share their opinions on the 41-year-old’s decision.
James snubbed a reunion with the Miami Heat or the Cleveland Cavaliers while also deciding not to head out to the San Francisco Bay Area and play for the Golden State Warriors.
After the news came out, one analyst spoke out in defense of James’ move to Philadelphia, as many felt the former Los Angeles Lakers superstar was ‘ring chasing’.
Colin Cowherd Offered Thoughts on LeBron James’ Move
On a Friday edition of “The Colin Cowherd Podcast,” Fox Sports commentator Colin Cowherd, who hosts “The Herd” on FS1, offered some thoughts about James going to play for the 76ers.
“This move by LeBron feels like Brady to Tampa,” Cowherd said, referring to when Super Bowl champion QB Tom Brady continued his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“This is not KD to the Warriors. I mean, the Sixers haven’t won an Eastern Conference championship in like 25 years. I think only the Hornets and the Wizards have had longer droughts,”Cowherd continued.
“This is not ring chasing. It’s Tampa-Brady. Brady’s like, ‘OK, I’ve got a defensive head coach. We don’t draft receivers well. I need wide receivers, a head coach with an offensive sensibility, maybe I go to a little weaker division so I can stack some wins, you know, in my final couple years.’ LeBron similarly…” Cowherd argued, offering reasoning behind James’ decision to join the 76ers.
James has won titles with the Lakers, Cavaliers, and Heat, and it appears the four-time champion wants to add one more before potentially retiring.
By picking the 76ers, he’s also going to be on a team that has Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid on it.
There are concerns, though, about Embiid’s health this season.
According to ESPN’s NBA Insider Shams Charania, James signed a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option with Philadelphia.
Charania also offered the explanation behind the 22-time All-Star joining the 76ers.
“It’s not about legacy of going back to Cleveland. It’s not about going to Miami, where he also played,”Charania said. “Those were legacy plays with a chance to win a championship, right? But how do you give yourself the best chance? And so he feels joining the Sixers, it’s about winning. It’s about competing.”
Last season with the Lakers, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game, shooting 51.5%.
In 23 NBA seasons between the Cavaliers (twice), the Heat, and the Lakers, James has averaged 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game.
Now, James gets to play in front of Philadelphia sports fans, who are some of the most demanding in the sports world.
