‘They’ll have a problem’ – Denmark coach, Riemer predicts Portugal’s fate after Ronaldo’s retirement

Denmark head coach Brian Riemer has expressed concerns that Portugal will face a huge problem when  Cristiano Ronaldo retires from international football.

Ronaldo has served as a fundamental component of the Portugal national team for over two decades.

Now 41, his departure from professional football appears imminent as he has even suggested that the 2026-27 season may be his final campaign in professional football.

Portugal is scheduled to play against Denmark in their third UEFA Nations League fixture during the current international window, having secured victories over Wales and Norway.

Following the Norway match, Ronaldo garnered media attention due to his reaction after being relegated to the bench without playing time.

Ahead of the Nations League encounter, Riemer was asked about Ronaldo’s importance from a leadership perspective within the Portugal national team.

The Danish coach told the press conference that the national team will likely encounter difficulties subsequent to the veteran player’s departure.

He said via Al Nassr Zone on X, “I genuinely believe that upon his retirement, Portugal will face a problem, as there exists something referred to as hierarchy. Portugal’s national team comprises numerous prominent personalities. Consequently, who will serve as the decision-maker, and who will assume leadership of the group? I believe this could present a substantial obstacle.”

Having been absent from the Norway fixture, Cristiano Ronaldo will seek to regain his position in the Portugal starting eleven for their match against Denmark on Thursday. The Selecao presently lead Group A4 in the UEFA Nations League with 6 points accumulated across 2 matches.

Following their encounter with Denmark, the Selecao will face Norway in a home fixture on October 4th to conclude their commitments during the international break.
