‘They will suffer…’ Diamondbacks fans justify Ketel Marte boos after return from unexplained absence
Arizona Diamondbacks fans are not willing to forgive Ketel Marte and forget his unexplained absence, even after he returned to the team last night.
Marte had been away from the Diamondbacks for a few weeks due to a private reason. While the coaching staff vocalised their support for him, fans were not nearly as accommodating.
Marte returned to the Diamondbacks for their game against the Philadelphia Phillies, and fans in attendance let him know how they feel about his recent stint away from the team.
Diamondbacks fans have no sympathy after Ketel Marte gets booed upon return
Ketel Marte made his return to the Arizona Diamondbacks during their 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, with just one hit during his three at-bats.
It was an unremarkable performance from Marte, with the biggest headline from his return coming thanks to the chorus of boos the Diamondbacks fans greeted him with as he made his way to the plate.
While the reception Marte received was far from welcoming, Diamondbacks fans on X showed him little mercy, with many slamming his recent stint away from the team.
One fan wrote, “100% deserved. Dude quit on his team to go to the bar!”
Another fan called out the Diamondbacks broadcast for misrepresenting fan sentiment, noting, “AZ broadcast says it was 50/50. As if we don’t have ears.”
A third fan praised the fans in Chase Field for their reaction, saying, “Proud of the fans tonight. We will no longer suffer these grown baby players. They will suffer us.”
However, not everyone was in support of the fanbase, as one user on X wrote, “Boo the only good player you’ve had since Goldschmidt. Yeah, good idea!”
“We gotta remember, there’s a lot of Phillies fans! Ketel, I got your back! I call out of work too,” joked a Diamondbacks fan who saw the humour in the situation.
Another fan lambasted the fanbase for making Marte a scapegoat, noting, “Arizona fans: Known for sacrificing great players to cover for mediocre management and coaching.”
And lastly, one final fan explained exactly why Marte has become so hated in Arizona, saying, “He earned every boo. Doesn’t give a care about the fanbase and clearly doesn’t care about being a good teammate!”
Marte will have to work very hard if he wants to earn the support of the Diamondbacks fans in the near future. But this could also be the first domino to fall, eventually leading to Marte being traded next year.
