The Single Most Important Stat From Georgia/Alabama

· · 1 min read

Georgia played solid second half defense and Gunner Stockton completed 82% of his passes. But if you’re looking for a stat that explains how Georgia pulled an (admittedly mild) upset in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night, here it is:

Alabama came into the game giving up an average of 78.6 yards per game on the ground. Against Georgia they surrendered 206.

If I’d told you coming into this one that the Athenians would play without both Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens and still rush for over 200 yards against the nation’s ranked rushing defense you would have had me sent for evaluation and asked if I heard that from a giant invisible rabbit named Harvey. The improbably solid effort put up by Dwight Phillips, Bo Walker and Nick Peal was a team effort that we can’t celebrate enough.

I’m not thrilled about the prospect of rolling with that trio for the rest of the season and hope Bowens and Frazier return sooner rather than later. But if the Bulldog offensive line continues to open up holes like the ones they flayed open in the Bama defense on Saturday, I expect we’ll still be okay. Until later…
