The Most Hilarious Comedy Movie From Every Year of the Past Decade

· · 14 min read

The past 10 years have produced some great comedies. Clowning and the art of hilarity are among the oldest and most vital domains of the performance arts. Laughing is cathartic and inspires as much as it alleviates. Despite massive changes, including a global pandemic, the longest actor strike in history, and fluctuating streaming requirements, comedy continues to be king. It remains a popular choice with audiences and is consistently successful at the box office.

Since 2016, there have been some truly amazing comedies released both in theaters and directly onto streaming. When the real world is rife with chaos, comedies provide some much-needed escapism. It is good medicine, and these are the best of the previous decade.

1

‘The Nice Guys’ (2016)

When two private detectives with very different personalities and working styles team up, it makes for a fantastic comedy of errors in The Nice Guys. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are stellar as Jackson Healy and Holland March, respectively. The two form the perfect double act. Crowe’s straight man as Jackson is perfectly paired with Ryan’s funny man of Holland, and the two find a treasure trove of comedy gold as they track down a missing person.

The Nice Guys blends action with intentionality as the comedic timing and situational comedy shine. Although the plot is interesting and there are some fantastic acting moments going on, The Nice Guys never stops delivering when it comes to comedy. As Collider‘s William Smith notes, “It genuinely doesn’t matter if you find the mystery of The Nice Guys fascinating or not, because you’ll be laughing too hard to care.” Although The Nice Guys was less than a box office smash, it has become a cult classic and enthusiastic fan favorite.

‘How to Be a Latin Lover’ (2017)

Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) is used to a certain level of luxury. After successfully seducing a wealthy older wife, he has been living the good life for 25 years. However, his world comes crashing down when his spouse dumps him for a younger man. Penniless and prospect-less, Maximo must move in with his estranged sister Sara (Salma Hayek) and her young son Hugo (Raphael Alejandro). Although dejected, Maximo is undeterred and continues to try and win the affections of wealthier older women, with some humorous consequences.

How to Be a Latin Lover is a riot. It flips gender stereotypes on their head, and watching Maximo and other kept men like Rick (Rob Lowe) vie for the attention of wealthier women is sublime. Derbez, Hayek, and Alejandro have terrific chemistry together, and their familial bond feels genuine. How to Be a Latin Lover has some endearing moments woven in, and it is a hidden gem of the 2010s. Comedy fans, especially romantic comedy fans, should add it to their watch list.

‘Incredibles 2’ (2018)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/incredibles-2-bob-jack-jack-phone.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

Unlike The Nice Guys, Disney and Pixar’s sequel movie Incredibles 2 was a huge financial success. The follow-up superhero film earned more than $1 billion at the box office. The Incredibles, released 14 years prior, had earned massive fan adoration, and audiences couldn’t wait to see what would happen in the second movie. The storyline picked up with the original characters and added a Mr. Mom-type plot where the patriarch of the superpowered Parr family, Bob (Craig T. Nelson), took over the family duties as his wife, Helen (Holly Hunter), began a new job.

Incredibles 2 was everything the first movie was and more. It delivered the same core values of family and friendship and included even more comedic moments and extraordinary circumstances. Watching the Parr family trying to balance their normal life and the complications of being superhuman is spectacular. The crowd-pleasing humor for general audiences and the meta mentions for comic book fans make The Incredibles canon two of the best superhero comedies ever made.

‘Good Boys’ (2019)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/good-boys-cast.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

Best friends Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams), and Thor (Brady Noon) want to up their cool status and attend a party in Good Boys. Unfortunately, what starts out as a somewhat ordinary day soon spirals way out of hand. Running from the cops, carrying stolen drugs, and hijacking a drone are just some of the misadventures the “Bean Bag Boys” get up to in the movie. Good Boys feels like a sort of Superbad for tweens, and it is endlessly entertaining to watch the youngsters try to navigate the more adult aspects of the shenanigans with innocence and gusto.

Good Boys is a laugh-out-loud coming-of-age movie like none other. Writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky are used to making funny moments that land with their work on projects like The Office and Year One. Their comedy finds yet another title to shine on in Good Boys. It is uproariously funny and disarmingly charming.

Four of the largest communities on the planet, and four completely
different reasons to belong to one. Here is yours, what it would give you, and the argument you
would be having within a week.

You belong to the fandom that is really about comfort. Hogwarts
works on people because it is a place rather than a plot, and the pull is not the wizard war
so much as the corridors, the food, the weather and the sense that somebody is expecting
you.

  • You are drawn to belonging, which is why this fandom sorted itself into houses within
about five minutes and has never stopped.
  • This is the most social of the four, and the one most likely to know which type every
single person in your life would be.
  • The books are built to be reread rather than analysed, and rereading is exactly what you
    do with things you love.
  • The new HBO series is bringing the whole thing back one book at a time, which means the
arguments are about to start all over again.

You belong to the deepest fandom on this list, the one where
somebody has always read further than you and is quietly delighted to say so. Middle-earth
rewards patience more than any other world in popular culture.

  • You like the sense that the story you are reading is only the visible part of something
enormous, which is precisely how Tolkien built it.
  • This fandom takes adaptation seriously to a degree that other fandoms find slightly
alarming, and it has good reasons for that.
  • Your favourite thing about the books is probably the bit that is not action at all,
which is the walking, the songs and the long goodbyes.
  • Nobody here thinks heroism belongs to the powerful, and the whole story exists to make
    that argument.

You belong to the loudest and largest tent of the four, the one
where three generations are all watching the same thing and none of them agree about any of
it. That disagreement is not a flaw in this fandom, it is the main activity.

  • You want something you can share with absolutely everybody, from a six year old to a
grandparent, and this is the only one on the list that really does that.
  • Nobody argues like Star Wars fans argue, and the argument has been running since roughly
1980 with no sign of resolution.
  • The pull here is sensory before it is narrative, since it is the sound design, the score
and the look of a used and dented galaxy.
  • You would be first in the queue, in costume, with strong opinions and a genuinely good
    time.

You belong to the thinking fandom, the one that turns up for the
argument rather than the explosion. Trek has always been a series of ethical problems in
space, and the people who love it love being asked what they would have done.

  • You are an optimist in a way that is currently unfashionable, and this is the only major
franchise still willing to say the future might be better.
  • The best episodes are the ones where nobody fires anything, which is a sentence that
makes perfect sense to this fandom and to nobody else.
  • Starfleet Academy brought the franchise back to a classroom in 2026, which is
appropriate, because Trek has always been a bit of a seminar.
  • You would want the conversation afterwards more than the episode itself, and here you
will always find somebody willing to have it.

‘Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga’ (2020)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/eurovision-song-contest-the-story-of-fire-saga-will-ferrell-rachel-mcadams.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

COVID-19 changed the face of the world in 2020. No industry, continent, or private sector was left untouched by the pandemic. In this tumultuous time, a campy musical comedy was released on streaming, and it became one of the best comedies of the past decade. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga follows a singing duo from Iceland who want to compete in the prestigious Eurovision Song Contest. Through some catastrophic and fortuitous events, the underdog band called Fire Saga is chosen to represent their country and compete.

Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams are perfect together in the movie. Ferrell’s more obvious and overt antics find their kismet antithesis in McAdams’ grounded and focused performance. Fire Saga becomes the band everyone wants to root for, and the film features many cameos and nods to real Eurovision stars. It is a shame that some of the publicity and press events planned for the movie did not get to happen, but Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga stood on its own two feet without the extra marketing. During such a stressful year, it became the comedy everyone needed, delivering laughs, inspiration, hopeful moments, and a fantastic soundtrack.

‘Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ (2021)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/hitmans-wifes-bodyguard-chair-scene.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

A sequel to the surprise 2017 hit The Hitman’s Bodyguard, the 2021 movie Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard added Salma Hayek’s Sonia Kincaid to the charismatic roster of Ryan Reynolds‘s Michael Bryce and Samuel L. Jackson‘s Darius Kincaid. Joining the storyline as Darius’ wife, Hayek brings her signature ability to blend comedy and action. She is an excellent addition to the cast and breathes life into the complex and impulsive, gun-toting and maternally inclined Sonia.

The frenemy dynamic between Reynolds and Jackson that worked in the first film is back again in Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. The inclusion of Hayek’s character gives the story an extra level of impact, and it is a solid sequel to the first film. Though critics largely panned the film, audiences loved it, and Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard soared into the top 10 on Freevee last year. Comedy is subjective, and Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is living proof. With such a disparaging gap between critics and fan opinions, new viewers are left to watch the movie for themselves and decide who they agree with. Planting this article’s flag securely with the audience’s votes, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a win for action comedies everywhere, and it deserves a spot on this list.

7

‘The Lost City’ (2022)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/the-lost-city-channing-tatum-sandra-bullock.jpeg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />
    Image via Paramount Pictures</figure>

When successful romance novelist Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) suffers a personal loss, she slowly begins giving up on life and her writing career. As she prepares to take her final bow on a book press tour, Loretta is kidnapped by an affluent treasure hunter named Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe), who believes she can help him find the ancient relic he is looking for. Loretta’s cover model Alan (Channing Tatum) and her publicist Beth (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) launch their own attempts at rescue and risk their lives to bring her back.

The Lost City‘s cast is phenomenal. Bullock, Tatum, and Randolph are consummate professionals who know how to deliver on character performances. Their ability to add subtlety to comedic portrayals is iconic, and watching them all do their thing on screen together is perfection. Radcliffe also excels in a rare villain role and is ideal as Fairfax. Fans of treasure-hunting comedies like Indiana Jones, National Treasure, or The Goonies should put The Lost City at the top of their watchlist. It has genuine moments of intrigue and punchy self-aware humor throughout.

‘Barbie’ (2023)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/ryan-gosling-and-margot-robbie-in-barbie.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2" />
    Image via Warner Bros. Pictures</figure>

Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie is one of the funniest and most quotable movies of the past 10 years. The stylish satire of the toy industry’s biggest icon covers a wide range of concepts in its nearly two-hour-long runtime. Margot Robbie stars as the titular character, who ventures beyond the picturesque villa of Barbieland and into the real world to discover more truths about the universe than the quaint ones she has always believed.

The Barbie movie is a nesting doll of topics. From feminism to commercialism, gender stereotypes to politics, it’s all contained within Barbie. Even though some hard-hitting paradoxes are discussed, Barbie never loses its lighthearted presentation, and viewers can’t help but laugh, either at the blatant gags or the deeper irony. Ryan Gosling’s Ken makes for the ultimate lovable goof and clueless tragicomic jester. As comedies become increasingly subversive, Barbie is a highlight of the movement and was a massive hit with audiences around the world.

9

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (2024)

    &lt;<img src="https://static0.colliderimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/deadpool-and-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackamn.jpg?q=70&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1" />

The movie that fans had been dying to see for years finally happened in 2024. Ryan Reynolds had been well established with comic book fans as a winning on-screen Deadpool with his successful series of movies, and Hugh Jackman had literally played Wolverine longer than any other actor alive when Deadpool & Wolverine was released. Fans of the two beloved Marvel characters had taken Reynolds and Jackman into their hearts and had been begging for a mashup movie forever.

With such pressure to perform, Deadpool & Wolverine was under a microscope to deliver in all the ways fans expected, and it did. The movie was as bloody, gory, sarcastic, and sardonic as it needed to be. Watching Reynolds and Jackman fight and bond on screen was highly rewarding for fans who had followed their movies for decades. There are many movies that exist because studios guessed that audiences might like them. Deadpool & Wolverine is a rare and satisfying hit that was made specifically for the audiences’ outpouring of desire. Thankfully, Disney listened, and devotees got exactly what they had hoped for.

A surprise hit that smashed it out of the park last year was One of Them Days. Written by Syreeta Singleton and directed by Lawrence Lamont, One of Them Days features Keke Palmer as Dreux and SZA as Alyssa, two roommates who have to come up with rent money fast when Alyssa’s boyfriend invests all of their money into his T-shirt-making enterprise. Facing eviction, the desperate duo set off on a whirlwind excursion, trying to come up with the money by some clever and comical means.

One of Them Days became a financial and critical success that no one saw coming. It has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and earned over $40 million at the box office. Besides Palmer and SZA’s fantastic performances, One of Them Days is full of comedic talent and has cameos from Lil Rel Howery, Katt Williams, Janelle James, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia. If you haven’t seen this 10 out of 10 buddy comedy yet, this is your sign.
