The King Of New York's Law & Order: SVU Debut Continues An 25-Year Tradition
Laura Hurley has been writing about the entertainment industry for more than twelve years, after a decade as a content producer and editor at CinemaBlend after writing for WhatCulture and Examiner. Attending events like SCAD TVfest and San Diego Comic-Con over the course of her career, she has been immersed in the world of network, streaming, and cable TV.
The clock is ticking for Law & Order: SVU to debut its 600th episode, but viewers don’t have to wait until the milestone for Mariska Hargitay’s series to deliver a TV event. In fact, the drama is less than a week away from continuing a grand tradition that began 25 years ago, when nobody could have guessed Olivia Benson would still be investigating vicious felonies in her 28th season on NBC: a guest star who is already known as “King” is coming to SVU this fall.
November will be a huge month for Law & Order: SVU, after the drama aired a surprisingly spooky episode at the end of October to embrace the Halloween spirit. Christopher Meloni has been the most anticipated guest star for SVU’s 600th episode ever since news of his return broke, but somebody with considerably less acting experience will arrive even sooner than Stabler.
NBA star Jalen Brunson, also known as “The King of New York” after he led the New York Knicks to the championship in the spring, will make his acting debut in the next episode of Law & Order: SVU. While Brunson isn’t exactly known for his scripted work on the small screen, his episode will air less than two months after his cameo in Hargitay’s opening number at the 2026 Emmy Awards.
Who Jalen Brunson Is Playing On SVU

Jalen Brunson isn’t the first A-list athlete to appear on Law & Order: SVU. NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh were both in an episode of season 13, back in 2011, as themselves. Tennis superstar Serena Williams’ Law & Order: SVU cameo saw her playing an actual character rather than herself, when she appeared in an episode of season 12 in 2004. While Williams’ character had a minor role in her episode, Brunson seems like he could be a much bigger deal in season 28.
The preview for the next episode, “Forsaken,” reveals that Brunson will play a member of the NYPD. Benson says they’ll “need backup” for their case of the week, then addresses Brunson as “Detective Madison.”
It’s not clear how much of a role Brunson will have in the episode, but his character is at least high enough up in the NYPD that he’s a detective rather than an officer, and on familiar terms with the famous (and infamous) Captain Benson. Brunson doesn’t appear in enough of a promo to indicate whether his acting abilities are on par with his skills on the basketball court, and the logline from NBC doesn’t shed any more light on his character:
When a wedding guest is assaulted at the reception, Benson and the squad uncover a secret that changes the course of the investigation. Carisi’s pursuit of justice becomes increasingly complicated when key witnesses refuse to cooperate.

Even though few details are available about Detective Madison at the time of writing, it’s notable that Brunson is playing an NYPD officer. Historically, stars come to SVU to play either a victim or a perpetrator, going back to a Saved by the Bell veteran in 2001. A collection of some (but not nearly all) of the big names to come to the network TV procedural even includes an actor who won an Emmy for their performance:
It’s safe to say Brunson won’t win an Emmy for his work on SVU like Cynthia Nixon in 2007, but he is joining a venerable list of stars by coming on board as a guest.

Jalen Brunson making his acting debut in Dick Wolf’s TV universe is no coincidence, nor is it simply a result of Brunson helping the New York Knicks to their first NBA championship in more than 50 years. The athlete and Mariska Hargitay formed an unlikely friendship during the last NBA season, despite very busy schedules.
Hargitay wore the Jalen Brunson Kobe 5 Protros sneakers that he gave her to sprint from the Broadway stage to Madison Square Garden. As a longtime SVU fan, Brunson admitted he was “super, super star-struck” when he met her. After he joined her for a skit at the Emmys, it came as no surprise when news broke that Brunson would guest-star in SVU season 28, opposite his famous friend. They were both sporting big smiles on set.
Jalen Brunson’s episode of Law & Order: SVU will air on Thursday, November 5 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. In addition to featuring the NBA star known as “The King of New York,” it will be the 599th episode of the drama. With Christopher Meloni set to make his long-awaited return in the 600th episode, the preview at the end of “Forsaken” will likely provide a first look at him back in character as Elliot Stabler. Suffice it to say that viewers are in for a star-studded night.
