The Hoddle of Coffee: Tottenham news and links for Thursday, July 2

It’s getting hot out there. Real hot.

When your hoddler-in-chief returned from his 5-mile run at approximately 6pm Thursday the outside temperature read 97F (that’s 36). Way too hot.

I’m quite lucky that I have a good understanding of where the water fountains are around DC. I ran past three around the Tidal Basin (two within the FDR Memorial and one next to the Jefferson Memorial – For those heading to East Potomac, there is at least one that doesn’t work).

I try to not stop when I run but when it’s this hot outside, and if I’m running while under the weather, I’m going to stop for a proper #hydrationbreak – adverts not included.

There were a few things I did wrong before this run. Let met tell you:

  1. I ran at 5pm when it was still crazy hot. It should be 7pm or later. It can also be very early in the morning but fitzie is working his way back towards waking up pre-6am.

  2. I am still without a water bottle. This is BAD!

  3. I only have one running hat which I used Tuesday.

I am still without a water bottle. This is BAD!

I only have one running hat which I used Tuesday.

I’m actively working on all three of these points, but I hope to make the most progress on points two and three.

First, I fully intend on purchasing another running hat. I need another 2-4 more if I’m being honest. Problem is, I lost two during a January move.

Second, there is progress on the water bottle.

When I last wrote about running back in June I asked you all for your water bottle recommendations. I looked through them all.

I want to try something different with this newest water bottle and go for a soft flask.

So my plan now is to purchase the Nathan Pinnacle Soft Flask. This fella carries up to 18oz of water and has a pouch that looks big enough to store at least one gel, which is plenty for me. And with it being soft flask, the bottle should get lighter towards the ends of my runs.

I bring that point up because I chucked my other water bottle at Mile 25 during my most recent marathon because it weighed too much. Maybe something like this will help more.

I fully intend on purchasing this new water bottle in-store on Thursday. The intention was to do this Wednesday but, because I stopped a couple times during my 5-mile run, I didn’t make it to the store in time.

Anyways – it’s hot. Please hydrate!
