The Final Season of Prime Video’s Stephen King-Style Thriller Is Officially Upon Us

· · 5 min read

Several of the biggest shows on Prime Video came to an end in 2026. The most high-profile was The Boys, Eric Kripke‘s defining series in an era of superhero fatigue, which has won a total of five Primetime Emmys. Karl Urban‘s Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid‘s Hughie Campbell, Antony Starr‘s Homelander, and more all returned for an explosive, epic conclusion to this hard-hitting series, with the ambitious last chapter paying off, as an average of 57 million viewers tuned in per episode, making Season 5 the most-watched in the show’s history. Other examples of recent hits for the platform include the sci-fi Western Fallout as well as Alan Ritchson‘s monster-hit action thriller saga Reacher.

A similarly immersive gem is also coming to an end on Prime Video this year, as the psychological thriller series The Devil’s Hour prepares for its final dance. Peter Capaldi will officially return one last time as the mysterious serial killer Gideon Shepherd, following the shocking Season 2 cliffhanger that saw him shoot Lucy (Jessica Raine) in the head, hoping to trigger a “reset” of the timeline.

This different version of Lucy, haunted by echoes of her former lives, will join Capaldi’s Gideon in Season 3, which will now know will debut on Prime Video on Friday, December 4. “Lucy remembers her life as a police detective, when she failed to prevent a series of terrorist acts,” a synopsis for Season 3 reads, continuing:

“She remembers Gideon Shepherd, the serial killer who warned her the attacks were coming. Now she has been born again, neither a mother nor a police officer, but haunted by the memories of both. With only Gideon to turn to, Lucy teams up with her old foe to hunt down the monstrous child-killer who has evaded her across multiple lifetimes.”

Four criminal masterminds. One of them was always going to be yours.
Here is who comes for you, why they picked you out of everyone available, and what they want from
the encounter.

Your nemesis does not want to beat you. He wants to know you
completely, and he is patient enough to wait for it. The frightening part is how good the
conversation is.

  • Lecter is the most dangerous kind of opponent: the one who finds you interesting. He
never raises his voice, because he has never needed to.
  • You keep a great deal to yourself and you are careful about what you show. That reserve
is exactly the door he would knock on.
  • The films understood something other thrillers missed. The horror is not the violence.
It is being perfectly understood by the wrong person.
  • He would be unfailingly polite about all of it. That is the worst part.

Your nemesis is not after money, territory or revenge. He is
after a demonstration, and you are the person he has chosen to prove his point on.

  • The Joker only picks opponents who believe in something. Your decency is not a defence
against him. It is the entire reason he showed up.
  • He has no plan you can predict and nothing you can take away, which removes every tool
    you would normally reach for.
  • His whole argument is that you are one bad day away from being him, and you would spend
the rest of your life proving him wrong.
  • He would call it a magic trick. You would call it the worst night of your life.

Your nemesis respects you, which sounds flattering until you work
out what it means. He chose you because nobody else was worth his time.

  • Moriarty is the original criminal mastermind, the template every later one borrows from:
a mind the equal of the hero’s, pointed the wrong way.
  • You enjoy being the cleverest person in the room. He is counting on exactly that, and he
    has already built the room.
  • This is the rare nemesis who would be genuinely disappointed if you lost badly. He needs
the game to be worth playing.
  • It ends the way these things always end. Two people, one problem, and only one way down.

Your nemesis has no personal interest in you whatsoever, and that
is precisely what makes him unsurvivable. You are not a rival. You are a stop on the way.

  • Chigurh does not negotiate, gloat or explain. He arrives, he asks one question, and the
answer was decided long before you opened your mouth.
  • You trust yourself to handle things. He is the one problem in the world that has no
interest in how capable you are.
  • No Country for Old Men rewrote the screen villain by removing the thing audiences
quietly rely on: the sense that talking might work.
  • Call it. He will wait.

Nikesh Patel of Starstruck fame returns as DI Ravi Dhillon alongside Capaldi and Raine in The Devil’s Hour Season 3, and he is joined by several other recognizable faces. This includes Meera Syal (Goodness Gracious Me), Saffron Hocking (Top Boy), and Phil Dunster, who is best known for portraying Jamie Tartt in the Apple TV smash-hit series Ted Lasso. The Devil’s Hour was always intended as a three-part story, with little likelihood that any Season 3 success could change the decision to bring the show to an end.

The Devil’s Hour Season 3 officially premieres exclusively on Prime Video on December 4. For all the latest stories, make sure to stay tuned to Collider.
